Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today’s guest is Kwon Sung Kyu. Sung Kyu is from Soeul in Korea.
We met him through Harry – he was staying at the same backpackers as Harry in Nelson. And it turned out that he was also wwoofing with a Canadian girl that we’d been wwoofing with in the Okanagan. So … it’s a small world.
And Sung Kyu is the first Korean guest on The Daily English Show.
I asked him why he came to Canada.

Mmmm, ah, but you know what, I, I, I don’t still don’t know why, why I come, why I came here … just to find, to find an answer why I came here. It sounds like a little bit crazy. But I don’t know why. But … Ah because, if I, if I had to say, I think Canada is ah, really different from my, from my country. Like culture and nature, like that. So I think I decided to come here, because it’s different.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, Thai police say they will force their naughty officers to wear Hello Kitty armbands.

Hello Kitty is a famous Japanese cat with no mouth. She was born in 1974 and has a boyfriend called Dear Daniel.
Wikipedia says Hello Kitty is a phenomenon adorning over 22,000 products and accounting for half of Sanrio’s $1 billion yearly revenue.
Kitty-chan has many fans – including American celebrities.
Bu, apparently, policemen in Thailand aren’t too keen on the little cat.
The Associated Press reported Thai police who break rules will be forced to wear hot pink hello kitty armbands.
If officers are caught doing things like littering, parking in a prohibited area, or arriving late, they’ll be forced to stay inside and wear the armband all day.
The acting chief of the Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok is quoted as saying:
“Simple warnings no longer work. This new twist is expected to make them feel guilt and shame and prevent them from repeating the same offense, no matter how minor.”
“(Hello) Kitty is a cute icon for young girls. It’s not something macho police officers want covering their biceps.”

And that was Stick News for Monday 6 August.
Kia Ora.

conversations with sarah
#281 When did you come to Canada?

Step 1: Repeat Sarah’s lines.
Step 2: Read Sarah’s lines and talk to Sung Kyu.

Sarah Have you been to any other countries apart from Canada?

Sung Kyu China. China I’ve been to … I went to there f… I don’t know when was it, but I went to there ‘cos my relatives live in China. Ah… It’s quite interesting because everything is getting developed, developed. And there are lots of people. It’s totally different than here. There are no p… not many people here. But China there are so many people around you – yeah, it’s really interesting.

Sarah When did you come to Canada?

Sung Kyu At the end of March. Yeah, I came here at the end of March. And it was so cold for me. So I can not, I can not stay, I couldn’t stay my WWOOF host house. So I just … yeah I just left, to, for hostel. And from that time I kept moving and moving. And I, and I started working in, at the farm again at the end of April.

Sarah Did you enjoy WWOOFing?

Sung Kyu It depends on the family. To be honest, there are a little bit bad family, for me. Not, I mean, not that good. But there are, there are also good family. So I think it depends on the family. And … I don’t know about you but especially when you work at a farm I think you need to be careful insect bites or that poison plants or something like that, especially, like this, yeah.

Sarah How many WWOOF hosts did you stay with?

Sung Kyu Seven, eight? Yeah, seven, and seven and eight. Cos I, I usually stay for two or three weeks. So I don’t stay for a long time. So I usually, I c… I move a lot.

Sarah How did you learn English?

Sung Kyu I learned English – how to read and how to write – in high school. But my English teacher couldn’t speak English. So I … how to speak English I studied by myself. And reading and writing I learned in high school.

Sarah Is it easy travelling in Canda?

Sung Kyu Yeah, I think so. Cos, everything, I mean, even if I don’t know what’s going on in Nelson, there is an information center so I could go there, I could ask something that I don’t know. And … especially Vancouver, like, like Vancouver, and Victoria, like Calgary, those kind of cities. I have some kind of difficulty. It’s too crowded and people are, people are not that friendly. But in here, Nelson and countryside, people are really kind and friendly, so I don’t have any difficulty. But cities, a little bit.

Sarah What do you think of Nelson?

Sung Kyu Nelson, I like, I really like here cos people are really friendly and everything is really calm, calm and quite. And … and I heard that this Nelson is know as, ah, what is it, mountain biking and canoeing something like that. Outside activity. So I really like here, yeah.

Sarah What advice do you have for people who are studying English?

Sung Kyu Ah, just don’t quit. Go for it. That’s all. Yeah, yeah. And watch Friends, watch Friends, yeah, that’s a really good TV show.
